Maker Margins

Business maths for people who make things. Small, sharp calculators for the numbers that decide whether a handmade product is worth making — and none of them ever send your figures anywhere.

Live Pricing

The Maker's Price Bench

Work out what to charge after the marketplace takes its cut. Instead of multiplying your costs by four and hoping, it solves backwards through the whole fee stack to find the price that actually leaves you the profit you asked for.

  • Solves for price from your target profit, not the other way round
  • Shows what your hands-on time is really earning per hour
  • Catches the gap between postage charged and postage paid
  • Fee presets for Etsy US & UK, Shopify and craft fairs

Etsy Fee Calculator

Enter what the buyer paid and see every fee broken out separately, plus what actually reaches your bank. Including the one almost nobody accounts for — Etsy charges its percentage on the postage you collect, not just the item.

  • Each fee itemised, not rolled into one number
  • The fee on your postage shown on its own line
  • Offsite Ads modelled properly, cap included
  • Works backwards from the payout you want

Shipping Profit Checker

Does the postage you charge actually cover the postage you pay? It has to cover the box it goes in and the marketplace's cut of the shipping too — and when it doesn't, the gap never shows up as a loss because it's buried in a payout that still looks like profit.

  • Counts packaging, which is usually where the loss lives
  • Includes the fee charged on the postage you collect
  • Multiplies the gap out across a month of orders
  • Tells you what to charge, or what to add for free shipping

Discount Calculator

A 20% off code doesn't cost you 20%. Your materials, hours and postage cost the same either way, so the whole discount comes out of the profit alone — which is why a fifth off the price can remove seven eighths of what you earn.

  • Profit per sale at any discount level
  • How many extra sales it takes just to stand still
  • The largest discount you can run before it costs you
  • Common levels side by side, 10% through 50%

Craft Fair Breakeven

Covering the booth fee is a low bar and almost every fair clears it. The real question is whether the day paid you for the twelve hours it took — loading, driving, setting up, standing there, packing down, driving home.

  • Two breakeven numbers: cover the cash, or actually get paid
  • Counts the whole day, not just the opening hours
  • What the day works out at per hour
  • Card fees and stock cost included

What's next

Everything originally planned is now built. New tools come from what sellers actually get stuck on — so if there's a number you keep working out by hand, that's the best candidate for the next one.

The one idea behind all of these

Marketplace fees are charged on the order total — the item plus the shipping the buyer paid. That single fact breaks the arithmetic most sellers use, because raising your price to cover a fee also raises the fee.

If fees come to 11% and you want to clear $30, pricing at $30 plus 11% leaves you short every time. The fee lands on the higher number, not the one you started from. Netting a target after a percentage is taken out means dividing, not multiplying:

order total = (what you want to clear + costs) ÷ (1 − fee rate)

Every tool here runs that calculation properly. It's not complicated maths, but getting it backwards is the single most common reason a handmade product that looks profitable isn't.

The full Price Bench — $12, once

The calculators above stay free and always will. If you price more than the occasional piece, the downloadable version adds the parts a single-page tool can’t do.

  • Save products and compare them by true hourly rate, so the one quietly losing money shows up
  • A reusable material library — enter a supply cost once and use it everywhere
  • CSV export for bookkeeping, and a printable one-page cost sheet per product
  • Works offline forever. No account, no cloud, no subscription.
  • Every tool added later is included. Buy once; the price rises as tools are added, so today is the lowest it will be.
